Babies with colic often seem as if they are in pain and are difficult to soothe. This is a common problem in babies from 2 – 3 weeks of age, reaches its worst at 6 weeks and then finally resolves itself when baby turns 3 – 4 months old.
Causes of Colic
It is still not known what causes colic.
Experts think babies have colic because their digestive and nervous systems are maturing.
A high incidence of colic happens in babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy or have been smoking around their baby.
Managing Colic
Reassure yourself that this is a benign problem that will clear up eventually.
Try and comfort your baby with cuddling, rhythmic rocking, going for a walk, warm baths, singing, and massages.
It is also okay to lay your baby down and let him cry for a short period. Or let a family member take over while you take a break.
Be patient. This will improve as your baby gets older.
Avoid frequently changing your baby’s formula.
See the doctor if your child has a fever, has persistent vomiting, does not seem to be gaining weight, or the crying does not go away by the time baby is 3 – 4 months old.
